Ordered literal replacements

Bulk Find and Replace

Review an ordered list of replacements before applying it to your source. Processing is local; source, rules and Undo stay in memory and refresh clears them.

Case-sensitive literal matching only. 1 MiB source, 50 rules, 10,000 code points per field, 5 MiB output and a five-second processing budget.

For a with a→b then b→c: sequential gives c; simultaneous gives b. Simultaneous uses first-listed matching rule, not longest match. Replacements never rescan themselves.

Rule 1

Find is empty: fill or disable before Preview.

How to replace

  1. Paste plain text or import one UTF-8 file. Enter nonempty literal Find strings and replacements; an empty replacement deletes matches.
  2. Enable, reorder or remove rules and choose sequential or simultaneous mode. Multiline fields use LF for new breaks unless you select CRLF for that rule.
  3. Preview explicitly, inspect counts and the complete text, then copy/download or Apply with Undo. The source is never automatically overwritten.

Worked examples and ordering

For source a with a→b then b→c, Sequential returns c; Simultaneous returns b. For aaa and aa→X, both return Xa: matches do not overlap. In simultaneous mode a→X before ab→Y on ab returns Xb; reverse the rules to get Y. First-listed priority is not longest-match priority.

Literal text, Unicode and line endings

$&, $1, backslashes and script tags are literal text, never replacement expressions or HTML. Matching is case-sensitive, with no trimming or Unicode normalization. Disabled invalid rules are ignored; enabled empty Find is an error. Each rule scans left to right without rescanning its own output; later sequential rules can match earlier output.

Import preserves a leading UTF-8 BOM and all line endings. CRLF and LF are distinct literal sequences. The optional whitespace view exposes BOM, CR, LF and tabs. Textarea edits retain the exact original line endings in unchanged portions; new breaks in the source are LF, and each rule can choose LF or CRLF for newly inserted breaks. Changing that selection does not rewrite existing characters. Incomplete Unicode surrogates are rejected before UTF-8 export.

Limits and cancellation

1 MiB UTF-8 source, 50 rules, 10,000 Unicode code points in each enabled field, 5 MiB generated output. A worker and a five-second budget bound processing. Growth is checked after every sequential stage and as simultaneous output is built. Overflow fails atomically without a truncated success. Edits invalidate previews; Cancel terminates the worker and discards obsolete results. No regex, scripts, filesystem changes, multiple-file batches or AI rewriting. Export is a complete UTF-8 replaced-text.txt file.
