How to compress images

Quality or maximum size
Quality mode applies one setting to every image. Maximum size mode searches for the best quality that still fits, using the real encoded size. Images are never enlarged.

Are my images uploaded?
No. Your images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. Nothing is saved after you close or reload the page.
How does the maximum file size mode work?
The tool encodes the image at several quality levels and keeps the highest quality whose real file size is at or below your limit. 1 KB is 1,000 bytes. If it cannot fit without changing dimensions, it says so, and you can allow dimensions to be reduced.
Which formats can I use?
JPG, PNG and still WebP files, up to 20 images, 20.97 MB each, 83.89 MB combined and 25 megapixels per image. Output is JPEG or WebP. Animated files are rejected.
Can the result be larger than the original?
Yes, for example when a file was already heavily compressed. Those results are labelled as larger, and for JPEG to JPEG you can keep the original instead.
What happens to transparency and metadata?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas use the background colour you choose (white by default). WebP keeps transparency. Metadata such as EXIF location is removed because images are re-encoded; orientation is applied to the pixels.
