PDF Page Numbering Tool
Add configurable searchable numbers to selected pages of an ordinary PDF, on-device. Download a new copy; the source stays unchanged.
One ordinary unencrypted PDF, ≤25 MiB, 300 pages; output ≤100 MiB. Detected interactive forms/signatures are rejected. Modification may invalidate signatures, PDF/A, tags/bookmarks or annotation features; no preservation guarantee. Numbers may overlap existing content—inspect previews.
0 selected physical pages. T means original document page count. Selected order: .
Planned labels:
Placement is measured using licensed bundled Liberation Sans inside the visible CropBox after rotation, at 72 pt/in and 25.4 mm/in. Text is searchable, drawn above content without a white eraser rectangle. Tiny-page/long-label fit errors require smaller font/inset. No automatic shrinking. Changing settings invalidates outputs; refresh clears memory. No edits to old footers or PDF navigation labels.
How to number PDF pages
- Choose/drop a PDF and inspect physical page count. Choose All or ranges such as 2-5, 8.
- Set top/bottom left/center/right placement, physical/consecutive numbers, format, font size, opaque color and visible inset.
- Inspect current selected and nearby unselected previews. Numbers may overlap old content. Generate and download original-numbered.pdf; settings changes mark output unavailable until regeneration.
Five-page example
Selected pages 2,4,5 in physical mode print 2,4,5 with T=5. Consecutive from 1 prints 1,2,3 with T=3. Consecutive from 10 prints 10,11,12 with T=12. Selected count is separately three; gaps consume no numbers. Page N of T uses original count for physical, last sequence number for consecutive.
Selection and visible placement
Ranges reference one-based physical positions, not existing printed footers or PDF viewer labels. 1-3, 2, 5 selects four unique pages in document order. Zero, negative, descending, empty and malformed/out-of-range selections fail. No reordering.
Placement uses visible CropBox/MediaBox intersection, nonzero origins and rotations 0/90/180/270. Default bottom-center inset is 12 mm, with 72 pt/in and 25.4 mm/in. Actual embedded Liberation Sans glyph bounds measure the whole label; it stays within the chosen inset. Font size 6–36 pt, inset 3–40 mm. Tiny pages or long labels fail rather than shrinking/clipping. Nonstandard UserUnit scaling and unsupported rotation are rejected.
PDF handling and limitations
25 MiB/300 pages, output ≤100 MiB; memory failures remain possible. The existing loader rejects encrypted/password-protected, corrupt, detected signed or interactive form documents without ignore-encryption bypass. Modification can invalidate signatures, PDF/A, tags, bookmarks and annotation features; no broad preservation guarantee.
Numbers are real text overlays above original content, never white erasers or page-wide rasterization. Original page order/count/dimensions remain. Only two bounded preview pages render at once; local workers cancel obsolete jobs and release resources. No deletion/edit of old footers, Bates numbering, OCR, blank-page detection or PDF navigation-label changes. Check overlapping content before download. Refresh clears memory; no upload/persistence.
