How counting works

Words are groups of letters or numbers. Apostrophes and hyphens inside a word stay connected, so “well-known” counts as one. Other punctuation separates words; decimals such as “3.14” count as two.

Characters count user-perceived characters, so a combined accent or joined family emoji counts as one. The total includes spaces and line breaks. “Characters without spaces” excludes all whitespace, including tabs, newlines, and non-breaking spaces.

Line endings are treated consistently. These practical rules work well for English, Swedish, and similar space-delimited writing, but may differ from other counters and are not linguistic word segmentation for every language.

Advanced counting conventions let you choose whether hyphenated words and apostrophe forms stay joined, and whether numeric tokens count as words. The selected word-count rules also apply to targets and time estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded or saved?

No. The counter processes text in your browser and does not save it after you leave or reload the page.

Why might another counter show a different number?

Word and character counting conventions vary. By default, this counter joins internal apostrophes and hyphens, counts numbers as words, and treats grapheme clusters as characters. Advanced settings let you change those word-count conventions.

How are reading and speaking times estimated?

They use the word count and the editable speeds shown above. The defaults are assumptions—200 words per minute for reading and 130 for speaking—not a prediction of an individual pace.
