Tip and Bill Split Calculator
Add your chosen percentage or fixed tip and divide a bill equally. Every displayed share is an exact two-decimal amount, with any spare minor units assigned to the first people so the split adds up.
Calculations stay in your browser. Drafts are kept only in memory, never put in URLs or saved; refreshing clears them.Your bill and tip
Bill and fixed tip: 0-1,000,000,000 with at most 2 decimals. Rate: 0-100% with at most 4 decimals. People: 1-1000 whole numbers. Up to 30 numeric digits; dot or comma decimals, no grouping or currency signs.
Preset buttons change only the percentage. You can edit the rate freely; no percentage is recommended or required. Include existing taxes and fees in the bill, but do not enter this tool's tip twice.
All labels use two decimals. Changing the label does not convert any amounts or apply an exchange rate.
Your exact split
Enter a bill and complete every active field. Results update automatically; no previous result is shown during incomplete input.
How to calculate a tip and split a bill
- Enter the bill before this tool's added tip, including any taxes or fees already on your bill, and choose a whole number of people.
- Enter a tip percentage or use a neutral example preset: 0%, 10%, 15% or 20%. Presets change only the percentage. Add a fixed tip if wanted; leave its initialized zero otherwise.
- Choose generic units, SEK, EUR, USD or GBP. The label does not convert amounts. Optionally round the final total up to a multiple of 0.10, 0.50, 1.00 or 5.00.
- Review the visible rounding addition, complete tip and exact allocation. Expand the numbered people list, copy the summary or download UTF-8 TXT. Clear / Reset and Use example both offer one-step Undo.
Worked example: 100, a 15% tip and three people
The percentage tip is 15.00 and the final total is 115.00. Person 1 pays 38.34; people 2 and 3 pay 38.33 each. These add up to 115.00. Displaying 38.33 for all three would miss 0.01, so this calculator does not independently round the same average for everyone.
Exactly how percentage tips are rounded
Money is calculated in integer minor units with exact decimal percentage arithmetic. Bill times rate divided by 100 is rounded half-up once to the nearest minor unit. For example, 19.99 at 15% produces a 3.00 tip and 22.99 total; 0.05 at 10% produces a 0.01 tip, not zero.
The fixed tip is added after that percentage calculation. If final-total rounding is enabled, the calculator takes the smallest selected increment multiple at or above the pre-round total. Rounding 22.99 up to a 1.00 increment gives 23.00 and adds 0.01 to the tip. An exact multiple such as 20.00 adds nothing. The base bill never changes.
Why some people pay one minor unit more
The final minor-unit total is divided by the people count using an integer quotient and remainder. The first remainder people pay the quotient plus one minor unit; the others pay the quotient. The numbered allocation is deterministic, not random. With 100.00 and no tip shared among three, person 1 pays 33.34 and the other two pay 33.33.
Copy and download use a compact grouped allocation, not a thousand-line list. The optional on-page list shows Person 1 through Person N. Both use the same exact amounts.
Zero bills, currency labels and effective percentages
A zero bill has zero percentage tip. A fixed tip can still be shared: a 0.00 bill plus 5.00 extra split between two gives 2.50 each. A zero final total gives zero shares. The effective total tip percentage includes the fixed tip and any rounding addition, and is undefined when the base bill is zero; the page never reports Infinity.
All five currency labels use two-decimal display in this product. Changing a label performs no currency exchange, regional cash-rounding rule or conversion. The selected percentage is an input assumption, not a recommendation about customs or what a restaurant requires.
Input rules, limits and privacy
Bill and fixed tip accept 0 through 1,000,000,000.00 with at most two decimals. Rates accept 0 through 100% with at most four decimals. People must be whole numbers from 1 through 1000. Use a dot or comma as a decimal separator, with no grouping, internal spaces, currency symbols, percentage sign or exponent notation. Numeric fields accept at most 30 numeric digits. Extra decimal places and negative or signed inputs are rejected, not truncated.
Empty numeric fields are incomplete, including a fixed-tip field you have cleared; its initial zero makes that optional input ready without typing. Results and export controls are unavailable until every active field is valid. Editing a bill, rate, people count or rounding choice always recalculates from the original bill, never from an already tipped total.
Drafts are local and memory-only. Copy failure leaves the full selectable summary available; download failure is reported without discarding inputs. This bounded calculation needs no worker, uploads, accounts, payment links or remote processing. It does not support itemized or unequal splits, tax-rate calculations, payment processing or advice on tipping policies.
